Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Murphy Owner’s Guide

We stock Mighty Mule-compatible keypads and intercom modules on our trucks, and most replacements in Murphy run between $165 and $380 installed, depending on whether you need a wired keypad, a wireless entry module, or a full intercom swap. Same-day replacement is available for most common Mighty Mule keypad failures, because we keep the high-failure parts on hand. The way homeowners usually find us: the keypad works sometimes, then not at all, or it beeps but the gate won’t move, or the intercom crackles so badly the delivery driver gives up and uses the call box down the street.

What follows is everything we know about Mighty Mule keypad and intercom repair in this market, including what fails first, what it costs, and when you’re better off letting a technician handle it. Vance Gate Repair is an independent repair company. We are not affiliated with Mighty Mule, and we don’t steer you toward replacing a part we can repair.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

Mighty Mule has used three distinct keypad formats over the years, and matching the right one is where budget repairs go sideways. The original hardwired keypads (MM-KP series, often paired with the FM200, FM350, and FM500 openers) run on a simple two-wire connection to the control board. The later wireless keypads (MM371W, MM571W) transmit to a receiver module, which means a dead keypad and a dead receiver can look identical. The newest systems, including the MM600/MM700-era smart controls, use Mighty Mule’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi bridge modules, which change the repair path entirely.

The fastest identification method: the keypad for a wired system will have a visible cable coming out of the back or a screw terminal block inside. Wireless units have a battery compartment and no external wiring. If you have a Mighty Mule intercom or call box at the driveway entry, those are almost always wired back to the house or to an access relay, and the failure is more often in the cable run or the power supply than in the intercom unit itself. We install OEM Mighty Mule parts where they’re available and make sense, and we stock quality aftermarket equivalents for the older MM-KP series where the OEM part has been discontinued. We’ll tell you which one is going in before we install it, not after.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the output relay inside the keypad has failed or the wiring between the keypad and the control board has corroded. It’s the most common Mighty Mule keypad failure we see in Murphy, and it’s repairable in most cases without replacing the entire opener.
  • Some buttons work, others don’t. The membrane or tactile switches under those buttons have worn through. This is normal wear after three to five years of Texas sun exposure, especially on south-facing brick columns, which we see constantly in Murphy neighborhoods.
  • Keypad beeps but does not light up at night. The backlight LED or the photocell that drives it has failed. The keypad still functions, but if you can’t see it after dark, you’ll stop using it and start using the remote, which isn’t a long-term solution.
  • Intercom audio is scratchy, quiet, or one-way. The speaker cone or microphone element in the outdoor intercom station degrades with heat and humidity. Murphy’s summer heat plus spring storm moisture is rough on the paper-cone speakers in older Mighty Mule intercoms.
  • The keypad works after a battery change, then dies again in a week. On wireless units, this is usually the receiver module failing to stay awake, or the keypad’s internal battery terminals corroding. We’ll test both sides before selling you anything.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Mighty Mule keypad and intercom replacement costs in Murphy, including the part and the labor to install, test, and document it.

  • Wired keypad replacement (MM-KP or aftermarket equivalent): $165 to $240 installed
  • Wireless keypad replacement (MM371W / MM571W or equivalent): $185 to $260 installed, including receiver programming if needed
  • Intercom or call-box station replacement: $260 to $380 installed, depending on wire-run condition and whether a new power supply is required
  • Keypad relay or switch repair (no full replacement): $95 to $150, when the keypad housing and wiring are in good shape

The price you’re quoted is the price you pay. It’s written down and handed to you before any work starts, under our Haven Standard Clause 1. That price includes the part, the labor, testing the gate through a full open/close cycle, and a photo record of what was found, what was replaced, and the new part number. Every repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within one year, we make it right at no additional charge.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

Some keypad problems are genuinely safe to check yourself. If the keypad is wireless, open the battery compartment and look for corrosion or a swollen battery. If you see green crust on the terminals, clean it with a dry brush and try a fresh battery. If the keypad is wired and you’re comfortable with a multimeter, you can verify 12-24 volts DC at the keypad terminals with the gate opener powered on. That’s the extent of what we recommend.

Anything involving the gate opener’s internal wiring, the control board, or the intercom cable run is not a casual DIY job. Mighty Mule openers run on 12-volt DC in most models, but the control board and the power supply are live components, and a wrong connection can take out the entire board, turning a $165 keypad job into a $500 control board replacement. The high-tension hardware on the gate itself, including springs and cables, should never be touched without proper training and release tools. If any part of your diagnosis involves opening the control box, call us at (469) 613-2832 and we’ll send a technician with the right parts already on the truck.
